Jameis Winston apparently is honored to have been replaced by the great Tom Brady at starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
While appearing on Fox News on Wednesday morning to discuss a new COVID-19 hotline he developed alongside Dr. Scott Kelley, Winston fielded the football-related question that everyone wanted to ask with grace.
“For you to get replaced by Tom Brady in a city that you love so much, I guess that’s kudos to me,” Winston, 26, said.
“One thing you can learn about me is my faith. I have tremendous faith in the Lord … and one thing about Tom Brady is it’s understood that he is the GOAT,” he continued. “But at the end of the day, it’s a competitive sport. We all in the business. So I’m excited for whatever opportunity may hold.”
Winston, who the Buccaneers drafted first-overall in 2015, currently is a free agent for the first time in his career. There was no mention of where Winston expects to end up.
“I’m gonna have to play the Tom Bradys, the Patrick Mahomes, and all the other great quarterbacks eventually,” Winston said. “That’s how you win Super Bowls and that’s what I want.”
Winston underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in February 2020 after dealing with the knee injury, as well as a broken thumb, during the 2019 season.
Brady signed a two-year contract worth $50 million in fully guaranteed money with Tampa Bay on March 20.
