Jameis Winston, the controversy-machine quarterback who is the odds-on No. 1 pick in next month’s NFL draft, met with Roger Goodell in New York last week in an attempt to install himself in the commissioner’s good graces.

The report on MMQB.com states Winston requested the sitdown after he declared for the draft in January; Goodell consented in February. They finally met last Thursday as part of a 5-6 hour visit to the league’s Park Avenue offices.

The make-nice session was described as a savvy move by Winston, whose Heisman-winning time at Florida State included an infamous sexual assault investigation (he was never charged), as well as a shoplifting caper and a one-game suspension for a profane, misogynistic exclamation.

“[Winston] went out of his way to make a good impression, and to show that he understood what was going to be expected of him in the NFL,” a league executive told the website.

That may include a social media hiatus. Winston deleted his Twitter account the next day, according to ESPN.

Winston’s travel schedule last week also included a stop in Tampa to spend time with representatives from the Buccaneers, who own the top draft selection for the night of April 30.
