The Jets are preparing for a quarterback competition between Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick this summer, but they may add another player to the race.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said during a conference call with season-ticket holders on Thursday the team wants to add another quarterback.

“We want competition at every position,” Bowles said. “Ryan is going to compete, as well as Geno is going to compete, and we hope to add somebody else to compete with them, along with [Matt] Simms.”

Now, this could be taken as the Jets looking in the draft for a quarterback such as Marcus Mariota, the Heisman Trophy winner from Oregon. For months, the Jets have been seen as a possible landing spot for Mariota with the sixth pick. The team sent a contingent to Eugene, Ore., last week to work out Mariota.

If Mariota lasts to the sixth pick, the Jets could grab him. It is also possible the Jets could trade up to take Mariota if they really like him. That kind of trade likely would start with the Jets having to give up three first-round picks.

“Sitting at six is a very good spot to be in,” Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said. “It does allow us the potential to move up in the draft because we’re not far from the first pick.”

Fitzpatrick is expected back by the beginning of training camp. He is recovering from a broken leg that ended his 2014 season. That will give Smith the majority of first-team reps this spring unless the Jets add more competition.

The team begins its offseason program on Monday. They have a voluntary minicamp on April 28-30. The NFL allows an extra minicamp to teams with new head coaches. Then, the team has Organized Team Activities (OTAs) on May 19-21, May 26-28 and June 2-5. The spring program concludes with the mandatory minicamp on June 9-11.

Maccagnan was asked by a season-ticket holder about getting a long-term deal done with star defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who can become a free agent next March.

“Muhammad has another year to go on his contract,” Maccagnan said. “That’s something we’re going to discuss here in the offseason at some point in time with him. Obviously, for us, first we’re going to work ourselves through the draft process. After that, that’s something we’re going to address going forward. I think for a lot of these things, it may be a process.

“Obviously, the agent and Muhammad have their perspective. We’re going to have our point, and at the end of the day, hopefully find a middle ground we’re both comfortable with. Muhammad is a very good player. I’d like to keep him a Jet. That’s a whole ‘nother process we have to go through. I don’t really want to get too deep into that at this point in time, because that sort of will work itself out here in the near future.”

Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper visited the Jets on Thursday, according to a source. Cooper is viewed as one of the top two wideouts in the NFL Draft along with West Virginia’s Kevin White.
