Jets second-year nose tackle Kenrick Ellis reached a plea agreement yesterday in a Virginia court case that has loomed over Ellis’ head since the Jets drafted him a year ago, his attorney confirmed.

Tim Clancy, Ellis’ attorney, said an agreement had been reached, but the plea deal has not been formally presented to the Hampton Circuit Court yet for approval. That should occur early next week. Ellis’ trial on malicious wounding charges had been scheduled to begin Tuesday.

Clancy would not divulge the details of the agreement because a judge had not approved it yet.

The Star-Ledger quoted S. Howard Woodson, who represents the alleged victim, Dennis Eley, as saying Ellis has agreed to plead guilty to a lesser count of misdemeanor assault and battery.

Woodson told the newspaper that Ellis’ plea will result in six months of active jail time, but Virginia law would reduce that to 90 days. It is unclear when that time would be served, if Woodson is correct.

Clancy said these details of the agreement are inaccurate and was furious that Woodson had spoken about the deal.

“It’s entirely inappropriate for anybody to talk about a plea agreement until it’s been approved by a court,” Clancy said.

The Jets declined comment.
