They are 0-3, besieged by injuries and facing a quick turnaround for a Thursday night game at MetLife Stadium.
What is true for the Jets is also true for their opponent this week, making a prime-time clash against the Broncos their best shot at a win for the foreseeable future. The Jets have been drowning while getting outscored by 57 points through the first three weeks this season, but a potential life raft could be coming their way Thursday in the form of another beat-up opponent led by Jeff Driskel or Brett Rypien at quarterback.
“Definitely, we’re thirsty for a win. We need it bad,” linebacker Avery Williamson said Monday as the Jets put Sunday’s 36-7 loss to the Colts in the rearview mirror and turned their attention to the short week at hand. “We gotta make sure we take advantage of Denver as much as possible on Thursday. They definitely have some athletes that can play. They’re professionals as well, just like we are. We gotta make sure we’re ready and on point and make sure we’re locked in.”
Adam GaseCharles Wenzelberg/New York PostOf course, the Broncos could see the same opportunity in the Jets, after Sam Darnold threw two pick-sixes Sunday in another game without his top weapons while his defense continued to struggle with tackling.
But if the Jets are going to get off the mat and into the win column, this would appear to be their chance. After the Broncos, they have the Cardinals, Chargers, Bills, Chiefs and Patriots on the schedule before back-to-back games against the Dolphins on either side of their bye week. The challenges that await place an even higher premium on the Jets picking up their first win Thursday night.
After Darnold watched the Colts film on the plane ride back Sunday night, he said Monday he needed to be smarter in his decision-making and taking care of the football. But he won’t have much time to linger on a brutal game.
“We’re right into Denver, we don’t have time to sit there and feel sorry for ourselves and do the, ‘I wish I would have done this or I could have done this,’” coach Adam Gase said. “We got to move on to the next game, we got to get ready for this one because it’s coming up quick.”
While much has been made about the Jets’ injury woes, the Broncos can share in their misery. It got worse Monday when starting defensive tackle Jurrell Casey was ruled out for the year with a bicep tear, joining linebacker Von Miller, wide receiver Courtland Sutton and cornerback A.J. Bouye among those on injured reserve. They will also again be without quarterback Drew Lock (shoulder), with coach Vic Fangio telling reporters Monday that either Driskel or Rypien would start Thursday.
The Broncos, who benched Driskel for Rypien in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Buccaneers, have also given up 13 sacks in the past two weeks. It all could be a boon for a Jets defense that has struggled to get back to its 2019 form, when it was the strength of the team.
“Guys aren’t quitting,” safety Bradley McDougald said. “Guys are here, guys are motivated, guys are asking what more they can do to turn this thing around.
“We still got the talent to compete and go out there and win. We gotta obviously get a win this Thursday. All we gotta do is just believe we can win. It’s all about belief.”
