After an eventful offseason, Jets outside linebacker Dylan Donahue was back on the field Tuesday for the first OTA of the spring, saying he underwent a “life-changing” experience.
Donahue was arrested in February after going the wrong way in the Lincoln Tunnel while allegedly intoxicated. He was charged with DWI. It came to light this was his second driving while intoxicated incident in less than a year. He checked himself into alcohol rehabilitation in March and now says he is sober.
“It was very enlightening. I went through a lot,” Donahue said. “I volunteered to go down to inpatient treatment in Jacksonville. I think it was a life-changing experience. It was very awakening and life-changing this offseason.”
Donahue spent 30 days in rehab and said the experience changed him.
“I was honestly kind of excited because I was ready to make some life changes,” Donahue said.
The Jets drafted Donahue in the fifth round last year. He played in four games before suffering a season-ending elbow injury.
Donahue said he could not discuss what happened in the Lincoln Tunnel since it is a pending case, but feels God saved him that night.
“I’m a firm believer in God. I was born and raised Christian,” Donahue said. “I believe that he saved me and the other people that were involved.”
Donahue called it a wake-up call and said he feels better now that he is not drinking.
“My mind feels a lot clearer,” Donahue said. “I’m able to remember things a lot better. Physically, too, I’ve gained a little bit of weight. Last year that was a problem for me, keeping on my weight. There’s a lot of benefits.”
Coach Todd Bowles said Donahue is putting in work this offseason.
“He’s got his head down and he’s working,” Bowles said. “He’s working on some personal things that he’s told you guys. He’s just working hard every day and trying to get the system down. We’ll see what comes of it when everything comes to a head.”
New WR Terrelle Pryor was missing from Tuesday’s OTA. Bowles said Pryor is a “little injured.” He said it was an ankle injury but not in the same area that caused Pryor to have surgery with the Redskins last year. Bowles said Pryor has been at the Jets’ offseason workouts. … TE Bucky Hodges was not on the field.
WR Quincy Enunwa, who injured his neck last year, did wide receiver drills but not team drills and did not wear a helmet. … Safety Marcus Maye did not practice. He had ankle surgery in January.
