CORTLAND – Both Geno Smith and coach Rex Ryan defended the Jets quarterback’s conditioning Wednesday after an NFL Network report said Smith was not in shape.

Brian Baldinger reported Monday that Smith was lagging behind in sprints among the quarterback, even calling it “embarrassing” how out of condition Smith looked.

“I have none,” Smith said when asked his reaction to that. “That’s his opinion. My coaches are the ones who evaluate me. I haven’t heard that from them so I don’t have anything to say to that.”

Ryan came to the rookie’s defense.

“It sounds like if we’re training for the Olympics or something or if he’s going to run whatever, the marathon, we might be in trouble,” Ryan said. “I haven’t seen that in him. He seems fine to me. He looked good when he ran for 80 yards that one play.”
