Despite getting in a heated exchange on the sidelines Sunday, Raiders coach Jon Gruden claims he doesn’t have a problem with his quarterback, Derek Carr.
Gruden downplayed the confrontation during the Raiders’ 23-21 win over the Cardinals, which earned Oakland just its second win of the season. The incident happened in the first half after a terrible three-and-out where Carr called back-to-back timeouts, which is a penalty.
As Carr hustled off the field, Gruden started mouthing off to Carr, who also had words for Gruden. It was obvious that the Raiders coach, who signed a 10-year, $100 million contract in the offseason, was frustrated with something.
“That’s the first time you’ve seen it, it ain’t the first time it’s happened,” Gruden said when asked about the exchange. “We’re both competitors, we’re competing hard there. We had a man-to-man situation, he went for the big play, and we had a mild disagreement. But you know what? That’s part of this business. We’re going to have times when we clash a little bit. We’re also very supportive of one another. I’m very proud of him. He’s been through a lot this year. I’m glad he’s our quarterback.”
There was a report claiming tight end Lee Smith had to jump in and calm down Gruden, but the Raiders coach denied that.
“Is that how it looked? I don’t know. I can handle my own business,” said Gruden, who is 2-8 in his first season back on the sidelines.
Carr led the Raiders to a come-from-behind win, completing 19-of-31 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
“He brought us back to win in the fourth quarter,” Gruden said. “That’s the sign of a great quarterback.”
