Tom Brady has Rob Gronkowski again. He has Mike Evans and Chris Godwin to throw to in Tampa Bay, too.
Julian Edelman has no idea who his quarterback will be with the Patriots next season, but the most accomplished quarterback in NFL history said his longtime teammate and friend doesn’t need him to remain elite. Edelman, a 2009 seventh-round pick who played quarterback at Kent State, emerged as Brady’s most trusted receiver over the past decade, winning three championship rings and a Super Bowl MVP.
Last season, Edelman, 33, carried an underwhelming New England receiving corps, recording 100 catches, 1,117 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Edelman spent the offseason trying to convince Brady to come back on social media.
“Jules knows how I feel about him. I love that guy. He’s like a brother to me. We have been through so much and nobody is as big a fan of Julian than me,” Brady said during the NFL’s Draft-A-Thon Thursday night.
“He will be great whoever he plays with. As you guys know, there’s a business side to sports. Things happen. You have to take it day-by-day, like we’re all experiencing. Things change pretty quickly in the world and in our lives.”
After two decades, Brady won’t wear a Patriots jersey for the first time. Edelman has yet to publicly comment on losing the future Hall of Famer to the Buccaneers, who signed a 42-year-old quarterback as motivated as ever to a two-year, $50 million deal.
“There’s one thing I said about the very, very unfortunate passing of Kobe Bryant is we never know when our day is,” Brady said. “You think one day you are just waking up to do something really routine in your life, we’re planning for the future 30, 40 years from now, but the reality is seize the day.
“That is all we’ve got. Do what you love to do. Enjoy what you love doing and then have no regrets. I certainly don’t. It’s a blessing to still do something I love to do and I am going to work as hard as I ever had in a different place doing the same thing.”
