SHANNON, Miss. — A high school football player in Mississippi died after collapsing on the field at practice.

Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green identified the student as Jakobe Kyshon Cooper, news outlets reported.

Cooper, 16, collapsed “during a routine football practice” Tuesday morning, the Lee County School District said in a statement to news outlets.

The teen was pronounced dead at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, according to news outlets. His body was sent to the state crime lab to determine his official cause of death.

Cooper was a running back and linebacker at Shannon High School, news outlets reported.

“The Lee County School District and the Shannon Red Raider Family extend our deepest sympathy to this young man’s family,” district spokesman Robert Byers said in the statement.
