The Jets want to move on from just being competitive to actually winning games in 2018.
Last year, the Jets had some close losses. They lost five games by seven points or fewer and blew three second-half leads. They took some solace last year in being competitive. Not this year.
“I think it was a good start. I think this year, it’s about winning games,” wide receiver Jermaine Kearse said Thursday when the Jets reported to training camp. “You want to be competitive and that’s important. In this league it’s about winning games and being productive in that area. I think for us to take the next big step is for us to be able to finish games. We were in a lot of close games last year where we ended up not winning. … It comes down to just finishing and learning how to finish and learning how to win consistently.”
The Jets have not made the playoffs since 2010. They are coming off back-to-back 5-11 seasons. Players on Thursday spoke about creating a winning culture.
Cornerback Trumaine Johnson signed a five-year, $72.5 million contract with the Jets this winter. Besides what he can bring on the field, he also can teach the Jets about what it takes to become a winner. He spent five losing seasons with the Rams before they went 11-5 and made the playoffs last year. He was asked what the key is to turning things around.
“Day-to-day basis, the little things. Just being details and situational masters in games,” Johnson said. “The Jets last year, I was watching them, they lost some close games and they beat some playoff teams. So, they’ve got all the potential in the world to be a playoff team.”
Veteran guard Brian Winters said he sees a difference in the Jets’ locker room this year.
“Everyone’s bought in,” Winters said. “As far as the offense, we’re really excited. I think we have great things going. As far as a team, everyone’s excited to be here. I can see the atmosphere’s changed. The season is going to be great.”
How is the atmosphere different?
“Attitudes. We’ve got great attitudes in the locker room. That vibe is a lot better than in the past,” Winters said.
Center Spencer Long spent most of the spring watching as he recovered from a quad injury he suffered last year with the Redskins. He said Thursday that he feels great, but the training staff may want to ease him into practice.
Winters played most of last season with torn abdominal muscles. This year he said he feels 100 percent healthy.
“It’s a relief,” he said. “It’s awesome. It’s great to be healthy. Last season was very hard for me and kind of sucked but I’m looking forward to the season.”
