As if things aren’t bad enough for the 2-6 Dallas Cowboys, who will start their fourth different quarterback of the season on Sunday, they now have to face the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers.
And the betting line for Cowboys vs. Steelers underscores how far “America’s Team” has fallen. BetMGM has the Cowboys as 13.5-point home underdogs as of Wednesday afternoon, and according to ESPN this marks the second time in the Super Bowl era that Dallas is a double-digit underdog at home; the first Super Bowl concluded the 1966-67 season.
Furthermore, per ESPN, the Cowboys are 0-8 against the spread this season and are the only NFL team to not cover a spread in 2020. The 0-8 mark ties the 1991 Cincinnati Bengals and the 2003 Oakland Raiders for the worst against-the-spread starts in the Super Bowl era.
There’s a great chance Dallas will fall to 0-9 against the spread as its choice for quarterback on Sunday will come down to Garrett Gilbert and Cooper Rush. Dak Prescott is out for the season after a devastating season-ending ankle injury in Week 5 against the Giants. Backup Andy Dalton was concussed in Week 7 by Washington’s Jon Bostic and is now on Dallas’ reserve/COVID-19 list. Seventh-round rookie Ben DiNucci struggled mightily in Dalton’s stead during a Week 8 loss to the Eagles and will not get another chance to start.
The Cowboys are just 1.5 games behind the NFC East-leading Eagles, but with their quarterback depth decimated, Jerry Jones purging defensive free-agent signings and first-year coach Mike McCarthy already under fire, they face an uphill battle in a pathetic division.
