Aaron Rodgers, on his weekly appearance on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” Tuesday, attacked a report that stated Zach Wilson was hesitant to play for the Jets on Sunday against the Texans.

Rodgers, who’s been out since the season opener with a ruptured left Achilles tendon, vehemently defended Wilson, the Jets’ third-year quarterback, calling the report “chickensh–t at its core.”

Rodgers was responding to a story reported on Monday by The Athletic stating the Jets want to start Wilson in Sunday’s home game against the Texans but Wilson, who’s been benched for the past two games, is reluctant to play.

“When you use sources and whether intentional or unintentional try to assassinate someone’s character like that report does for Zach, I have a hard time with that,” Rodgers said. “You’re basically saying that this kid is quitting on the team and doesn’t want to play and is giving the middle finger to the organization.

“What is your impetus, what is your motivation to try and bury someone like that?” Rodgers said, referring to whomever the anonymous source was for the story. “That’s a problem with the organization. We need to get to the bottom of whatever this is coming from and put a stop to it privately, because there’s no place in a winning culture where this is not the only time. There’s been a bunch of other leaks.

“I think it’s chickens–t at its core, and I think it has no place in a winning organization.”

Dianna Russini, senior NFL insider for The Athletic, defended the report after Rodgers’ appearance.

“We [me and Zack Rosenblatt] stand by our reporting,” she told The Post. “We have numerous sources on the story and we never discuss sources.”

Rodgers wouldn’t say whether or not he spoke with Wilson about the issue, and about whether he was, indeed, reluctant to play Sunday.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh on Monday told reporters that he’s “not there yet” on whom he’ll name the starting quarterback Sunday, but he did say that Wilson came to him on Monday and said he “wants the ball.”

Rodgers on Tuesday seemed to echo Saleh’s statements.

“I don’t want to speak for [Wilson], because he’s gonna get a chance this week to speak,” Rodgers said. “He’s dealt with a lot of s–t. That would crumble a lot of people and I’m proud of him. I’m looking forward to letting him speak.

“I’ll tell you that I love the kid, and I spend a lot of time with him. I think he’s an amazing young man and I’ve had a blast spending time with him. He’s gone through a lot of s–t in the last three years and he’s got every right to be frustrated and disappointed about it. I think he’s done a good job of standing up and taking accountability this year.”

Jets receiver Garrett Wilson, speaking on the NFL Network Tuesday, also voiced support for the struggling quarterback.

“I’ve talked to Zach a few times in the last couple of days, one thing about Zach is he’s always ready,” Wilson said. “He’s always ready to go, and he’s excited for any opportunity he gets. With Zach, I have his back 100 percent. I think everybody on the team feels the same way.”
