The Panthers have officially ruled out franchise quarterback Cam Newton for Sunday’s game.
Newton, who was drafted first overall by the Panthers in the 2011 NFL Draft, re-aggravated a left foot sprain he suffered during the preseason in last week’s loss to the Buccaneers. There was speculation that he might not play against the Cardinals this Sunday, and the team confirmed that reality on Friday.
The three-time Pro Bowler didn’t participate in practice throughout the week while dealing with the foot injury. Head coach Ron Rivera alluded to Kyle Allen starting at quarterback for their Week 3 game.
Newton has started all but one game for the Panthers in his nine years with the organization. Last season, he accumulated 3,395 passing yards and 24 touchdowns.
