Jets rookie wide receiver Denzel Mims will miss Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks after leaving the team to attend to a family emergency.
Mims returned to his home in Texas earlier this week, and even if he makes it back to New Jersey in time for Sunday’s game, he will be ineligible due to the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols.
“Obviously, he’s been trending in the right direction and he’s been a big reason why we’ve had some better games since he’s been playing,” Jets coach Adam Gase said. “Protocols are what they are. He had to handle family business, which we support, because we felt like that was the right thing for him to do.”
The second-round pick out of Baylor was sidelined for the first six weeks of the season with a hamstring injury. In six appearances since, Mims has totaled 19 receptions for 324 yards, plus a catch for a two-point conversion in Sunday’s loss to Las Vegas.
Linebacker Jordan Jenkins (shoulder) also was among the players unable to practice Thursday, Gase said, “but he is as tough as they come, and I would not be surprised if he makes it to the game this week.”
Safeties Ashtyn Davis (foot) and Bennett Jackson (hamstring), guard Greg Van Roten (toe) and running back Frank Gore (concussion protocol) also didn’t practice. Offensive lineman Pat Elflein (shoulder/ankle) and receiver Breshad Perriman (shoulder) were listed as limited.
Safety Marcus Maye, who was critical of Gregg Williams for his Blitz-0 call in last Sunday’s last-second loss to Las Vegas, on the defensive coordinator’s firing: “I was surprised. It hit my phone like it hit everybody else’s phone. Out of my control. I just showed up for work Monday like I normally do.”
