Hakeem Nicks missed practice entirely today because of a nagging groin injury, prompting Giants coach Tom Coughlin to label his No. 1 receiver’s inability to stay on the field this summer “frustrating.”

“Certainly, I want to see him on the field — and he wants to be on the field,” Coughlin said. “It’s frustrating, but I’ve got to learn to control myself when it comes to that, as well, and just realize that — you know what? — he’s trying like heck to get out there.”

Nicks, who skipped the voluntary part of the Giants’ offseason program in part because of injury concerns, has been limited throughout the first week of camp by the groin strain.

Nicks didn’t participate at all today, leading to concern that the problem is getting worse, but Coughlin described it as a “little” injury and said the wideout’s availability remains day-to-day.

“[The Giants’ trainers] just want to quiet it down and make sure that it heals before he goes back out and maybe makes it worse,” Coughlin said.

The Giants moved practice indoors because of the rain, and Eli Manning struggled without Nicks as a target. Manning threw two interceptions in 11-on-11 drills on passes intended for Victor Cruz.

Wide receivers coach Kevin M. Gilbride indicated the Giants are getting impatient with Nicks’ constant injury battles, adding that he couldn’t remember the last time Nicks was totally healthy for a practice.

“He needs to practice,” Gilbride said today. “He and I talk about it all the time, and he knows it. He understands that in order for him to be ready to produce the way that he wants to produce and the way that we need him to produce, he needs to practice to get ready for that.”
