Grading the Giants’ 20-17 loss to the Chiefs on Monday.

Offense

Chiefs were shabby all season on defense and scoring only 17 points on them is not acceptable. First pass of the night was an interception by Daniel Jones (22 of 32, 222 yards) who never saw LB Willie Gay and basically handed KC seven points. What a poor start. RB Devontae Booker (15-60 rushing, 5-65 receiving) is not a game-changer. C Billy Price got turned around and nearly tackled Booker on what turned into a 3-yard loss. Tough break for Sterling Shepard (4-25) getting hurt again. Kadarius Toney (4-26) threw a pass for 19 yards but he does not look fully healthy. Will Hernandez (false start) and Nate Solder (holding) were called for penalties on back-to-back plays. Yuk.

Grade: C-

Defense

Bottom line: Limiting Patrick Mahomes (29 of 48, 275 yards, 1 TD) and the Chiefs to 20 points should be good enough. Terrible mistake by Oshane Ximines (offside penalty) wiped out Darnay Holmes’ interception that could have sealed the deal for the Giants. Two personal fouls on Tae Crowder, very damaging. CB James Bradberry was given the tough assignment of dealing with TE Travis Kelcey (4-27) and Bradberry held up. Julian Love alertly located the ball in the air in the first quarter and came up with a diving interception in the end zone. Logan Ryan reached in and forced a fumble by Kelce in the third quarter. Limiting Tyreek Hill to 94 yards on his 12 catches is acceptable, considering his longest gain was only 15 yards.

Special Teams

Dante Pettis was given a shot at a punt return and whiffed on his first one, muffing the punt badly. He was bailed out when teammate Keion Crossen recovered the loose ball. Riley Dixon’s first punt sailed 45 yards and out of bounds — a kick he will take every time against the dangerous Mecole Hardman. Dixon hit a line drive 34-yarder late in the fourth quarter. To make things worse, Cam Brown was called for an illegal touching on the play. Dixon was trying to change things up and was willing to boot some ugly kicks, though. WR Collin Johnson was hit with a taunting penalty on the punt return team. Are you kidding?

Grade: C

Coaching

Have to wonder about the time management from Joe Judge — he said his headsets crapped out in the first half and as a result he had to call two timeouts. The offense had no timeouts to work with in the final minute, making things more difficult. Good call by Judge eschewing the field goal and going for it on fourth-and-1 on the Kansas City 1-yard line. Judge has got to purge the mistakes out of his team. Patrick Graham clearly wanted to force the Chiefs to work for their points by giving up small chunks and was largely successful. It is growing increasingly difficult for offensive coordinator Jason Garrett to navigate through all these wide receiver injuries.
