Mark Sanchez and his teammates who joined him at his “Jets West” camp last week in California aren’t the only members of the Jets organization trying to improve this offseason.
While they wait out the NFL’s labor dispute, Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum and head coach Rex Ryan are looking for their own ways to gain an edge on the competition until they can begin to work with their players again.
“From our standpoint, I find it’s kind of entrepreneurial, because typically we’re in a very regimented situation — rookie camps, OTAs, veteran mini-camps,” Tannenbaum said yesterday at the New York Yankees / New Era Pinstripe Bowl Charity Golf Tournament in Monroe Township, N.J.
“I think most managers, we write down things. I know Rex had a long list of the rainy-day projects, so we pulled out that list and that’s what we’re working on now, and we see it as an opportunity to get better.”
One of the items on Ryan’s list is to talk to coaches from outside the organization in the hopes of learning a new trick or two. He’s already brought in former Colts offensive coordinator Tom Moore, and has plans to bring in other coaches, as well.
“We’re gonna bring in other guys, even position-coach guys who might be out there,” Ryan said. “If we can get an idea, or two ideas, from somebody, then it’s worth it.
“We’re about improving as coaches, and collectively, so we’re excited about that. This is gonna give us a chance to get better, and this is one way we can do that.”
