The Jets released kicker Sergio Castillo on Tuesday after he missed three field-goal attempts in Sunday’s 40-3 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday.
The writing was on the wall for Castillo when the Jets claimed kicker Chase McLaughlin off waivers from the Jaguars on Monday. Jets coach Adam Gase also said Sam Ficken could return from injured reserve this week. Castillo had been filling in for Ficken, who had a groin injury.
Castillo went 6-for-7 on field goal tries, with his only miss coming on a block, during his first stint as Jets kicker. Ficken returned but then re-injured his groin. Castillo took over kicking duties again, but struggled in the past three games. He made only 2 of 6 field goals and was 2-for-3 on extra points. On Sunday, he missed from 37, 41 and 43 yards after making his first attempt from 45.
If McLaughlin kicks for the Jets this year, he would be the fourth Jets kicker in the last two years and sixth in the last four.
