‘On to San Diego’
Rex Ryan said on a conference call with reporters today, “It’s on to San Diego.’’
A Sunday date with the 13-3 Chargers awaits for the 10-7 Jets at 4:40 p.m. Sunday after the Ravens beat the Patriots in today’s AFC wildcard game.
“We realize that we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us, but the reality of it is if we win three games we’re champions,’’ Ryan said. “It’s so close right now you can almost taste it.’’
Ryan said the win over the Bengals was “one giant step for us, and to try and accomplish our mission, it breaks down to this: If we can win three games we are world champions.’’
There’s a notion out there amongst many Jets fans that the Jets are playing with house’s money, having gotten into the postseason and won a playoff game.
“I guess maybe people feel that way, but that hasn’t been the way we’ve felt,’’ Ryan said. “All year, we’ve had one goal as an organization and that’s to win a Super Bowl. It’s great to get a win and great that people think we’ve had a good season already.
“(But) I came here to win a championship and that’s what our goal is.
If we don’t accomplish that it’s not necessarily a bad year, but one that’s not fulfilled.
“We’re excited about going to San Diego. They’ve won 11 straight games. We’ll see who’s got the best team.’’

Ryan, never afraid of making a prediction, yesterday made one about Jets receiver Braylon Edwards, who’s had an alarming case of the drops on some easy touchdown pass opportunities this season, highlighted by his drop of a 41-yarder from Mark Sanchez against the Bengals Saturday.
“Braylon, one of these days, is going to have an explosion where he has a three-touchdown game,’’ Ryan said. “I think that’s coming right around the corner.’’
Asked about Edwards’ propensity to make the tough catch but drop the easier ones, Ryan said, “The hard thing is to get your guy beat, the run route. Now do the easy thing, make the layup. I don’t know if it’s a mental thing right now, but we’ve got to get it right.
“I’m expecting him to have a huge game. I really think he’s going to have one of those bust-out games. I hope it’s sooner than later.’’

Ryan said he spoke with P Steve Weatherford, who was held out of Saturday’s game at the last minute with an irregular heartbeat, and feels confident about Weatherford being OK to punt Sunday in San Diego.
“We feel pretty good about it,’’ he said; “I talked to Steve and the trainers and he’s got the thumbs up to practice (Tuesday).’’
… In other injury news, Ryan said LB Bart Scott, who tweaked an ankle in the game but finished it, is likely to be limited in practice this week. “I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t play in this game,’’ Ryan said.

Ryan revealed that RB Thomas Jones wore a brace on his bruised knee in the game Saturday, an indication of why rookie Shonn Greene got the bulk of the carries.
He said he expects Jones to be “fresh’’ this week and that he “kept feeding Shonn because he had the hot hand.’’ “I expect Thomas to have his carries over 20 again this week,’’ Ryan said.

Ryan said the “scenario’’ he’s rooting for is a Jets win over the Chargers and a Ravens’ win over the Colts. That would have the Jets hosting the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game.
He said he and Ravens head coach John Harbaugh talked before their preseason game against each other about hoping to play each other in the playoffs.
“Both of us would sign up for that right now,’’ Ryan said. “We’ve both got a lot of work to do before that’s a possibility.’’

Lost in the euphoria of becoming only the fourth rookie quarterback to win a road playoff game Saturday night, Mark Sanchez couldn’t help himself when asked about Pete Carroll’s impending move to the NFL to become the Seahawks’ head coach.
Carroll, of course, coached Sanchez at USC and when Sanchez announced he was leading college after his junior season last year, Carroll was publicly critical of the decision.
“He knows that coming out early is a tremendous challenge for a quarterback, and the statistics don’t back up that it’s easy to be successful,’’ Carroll said at the time. “The facts are so strong against this decision. After analyzing all the information, the truth is there, he should have stayed for another year. He lost out on a chance to fully prepare himself. I don’t agree with the assessment of the decision.”
With Carroll reportedly on the verge of making his move to Seattle official, Sanchez was asked about it Saturday night.
“I just wanted everybody to know I completely disagree with his decision … statistics show that it’s not a good choice,’’ Sanchez deadpanned. “I talk to coach a bunch. I told him I was going to hammer him about it. I wish him the best, whatever happens, whether he stays in school or not.”
