ORCHARD PARK — The Jets had a pretty big injury scare in the second quarter of their 20-12 loss to the Bills when star defensive lineman Quinnen Williams went down with what looked like a non-contact injury.
Williams left with 8:14 remaining in the second quarter and did not return. The Jets said it was a calf injury and the initial indications were that it was not serious.
“What I got right now is day-to-day from the trainers,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. “They feel like he’s got a chance to make it this week.”
Williams will undergo more testing on Monday but Williams told teammates after the game that he was OK.
“I just asked if he’s OK and he said yes. I just left it at that,” linebacker C.J. Mosley said. “He played on a bad foot all year last year. Nobody is ever going to question whether he can perform if he’s not 100 percent. We all know what type of player he is.”

Before he was injured, Williams registered two sacks on Sunday to bring his season total to 11. He is the first Jet to have double-digit sacks since Muhammad Wilkerson in 2015.
WR Garrett Wilson had six catches for 78 yards and surpassed the Jets’ rookie record for receiving yards in a season with 868 yards. He broke the record of 844 set by Keyshawn Johnson in 1996.
“That means a lot,” Wilson said. “It would have meant a whole lot more if we win this game. I can’t lie. I was expecting to get that. It’s about winning. I want to win. Those personal accolades will be there regardless. If we’re winning, it’s going to come with it. We didn’t get the job done today.”

The Jets were down 20-9 with 1:21 left to play and had fourth-and-1 at the Bills’ 9. The Jets needed a touchdown (and two-point conversion) and a field goal to tie the game. Saleh elected to take the field goal.
“You can go either way. It was a discussion between all of us,” Saleh said. “I wanted to cut the possession. I felt like we’d get the ball back. They did us a favor and threw the ball on first down so we had a timeout and 50 seconds to go the length of the field. I could probably replay that in my mind and go for it. At the end of the day, we had the ball with a chance to at least tie. I can probably go back and forth on that.”
Besides Williams, the Jets also had injuries to WR Corey Davis (concussion), CB Brandin Echols (quad) and LB Marcell Harris (ankle).
Hero
Even in a loss, Jets quarterback Mike White was the star of the show. He completed 27 of 44 for 268 yards and no INTs, but more impressively he came back from two punishing hits by the Bills, the second of which injured his ribs and looked like it had KO’d him for the game. Yet White returned, finished the game and was taken to the hospital afterward for precautionary reasons.
Zero
Jets running back Michael Carter lost a fumble deep in Buffalo territory with 5:34 remaining in the game to stall what had been a spirited Jets comeback from a 20-7 deficit. The Jets had just cut the lead to 20-9 on a Jermaine Johnson blocked punt for a safety, and the Carter fumble stalled what looked like it was going to be a drive that produced a field goal or a TD.
Unsung hero
Bills quarterback Josh Allen wasn’t spectacular statistically, completing 16 of 27 for 147 yards, a TD and no INTs. But he added a critical 47 rushing yards, hurting the Jets on some scrambles, and kept Buffalo a nose out in front of the Jets. On both Buffalo TD drives, Allen kept the defense off balance.
Key stat
5 Consecutive punts to open the game as the Jets battled the elements and the Bills’ defense. They punted just twice in the second half.
Quote of the day
“We’re going to see these guys again.’’
— Jets coach Robert Saleh, boldly indicating that his team will be in the playoffs to play Buffalo a third time this season.
