Welcome to Twitter … and the hell that is April Fools’ Day.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady joined the social media site Monday and had one simple message: “I’m retiring. In my spare time, I’ll be tweeting #LFG”
For nervous Patriots fans over the age of 50, LFG means “Let’s f–king go.”
First, ESPN’s Steve Levy wonders: Wait, the twitter handle @TomBrady wasn’t already taken?
Second, why couldn’t Brady send this out from his Facebook or Instagram accounts?
Third, was this a good April Fools’ tweet? Brady even wondered it himself.
While Twitter seems to be swooning — a rarity that I hate to disparage — it feels a little dubious. The idea of Brady retiring would be far-fetched in any scenario, since the 41-year-old has repeatedly said he is not doing that. He also kills the prank by saying he’ll be tweeting in his spare time, clearly making it a joke.
This is somewhat surprising as Brady has a pretty impressive social media resume. He brings a nice mix of being funny and taking fans a little bit behind the curtain of his glamorous life.
