ARLINGTON, Texas — NFL insiders spent Sunday morning breathlessly reporting how Aaron Rodgers might be able to return for the playoffs.
The Jets spent Sunday afternoon making the idea of them even making the playoffs look laughable.
The Cowboys thoroughly beat the Jets 30-10 at AT&T Stadium to drop the Jets to 1-1 and drive home the fact that the Jets’ hopes and expectations drastically changed last Monday night when Rodgers tore his left Achilles tendon.
You can start with Zach Wilson if you’d like, because it always starts with the quarterback.
Wilson, making his first start in place of Rodgers, did not play well.
He completed 44.4 percent of his passes, threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter and was only able to lead the Jets on one extended drive.
But this loss was not just on Wilson.
Zach Wilson and the Jets lost to the Cowboys on Sunday. Charles Wenzelberg/New York PostThe Jets’ defense, whose members have compared themselves to the greatest defenses in NFL history, could not get the Cowboys off the field for most of the day.
Dallas (2-0) ran a whopping 83 plays to the Jets’ 46 and controlled the ball for 42 minutes to the Jets’ 18.
The Cowboys converted 50 percent (9 of 18) of their third-down opportunities.
Quarterback Dak Prescott completed his first 13 passes and was 31 of 38 for the game with two touchdowns.
“We just didn’t give ourselves a chance defensively to get off the field and give our offense a chance to get any kind of rhythm going,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said.
Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb had 11 catches for 143 yards, a stunning number against a secondary that prides itself on being one of the best in the NFL.
“It was humbling,” cornerback D.J. Reed said. “I felt like we actually needed this, especially early on in the season. Credit to Dallas. They have a good team. They went far in the playoffs last year. I think this was actually good for us, a blessing in disguise.”
On offense, the Jets could not establish the run. They had 64 rushing yards and 36 of those were on scrambles by Wilson.
Breece Hall is bottled up by the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon. Charles Wenzelberg/New York PostRunning backs Breece Hall (4 rushes, 9 yards) and Dalvin Cook (4 rushes, 7 yards) were just slightly more of a factor in this game than Rodgers, who was probably watching it on his couch in Malibu.
“I only got four touches. That’s why we struggled,” Hall said. “But it is what it is. I think we just got down early today and kind of just abandoned the run. I feel like, with any team, that kind of stuff happens. That’s just how it is, you feel like you have to get back in the game. It just slips away.”
The offensive line got destroyed by Cowboys superstar Micah Parsons, who sacked Wilson twice and pressured him nine times.
“He’s an elite pass rusher,” left tackle Duane Brown said. “It’s their first home game. It’s loud. You have to go silent cadence. He timed the cadence up a lot. He was getting a good jump off the ball. We didn’t run the ball as much as we wanted to in the second half. You get down like that, you have to find ways to make plays down the field. It’s an ideal game for a pass rusher to be in and he capitalized on his chances.”
Zach Wilson and the Jets managed just one touchdown against the Cowboys on Sunday. Charles WenzelbergThe Cowboys established themselves early with a 12-play drive to open the game that ended with a touchdown from Prescott to tight end Jake Ferguson.
Parsons sacked Wilson on the Jets’ first third down of the game, forcing the Jets off the field.
The Jets had glimmers of hope in the second quarter but they quickly vanished.
Wilson connected with Garrett Wilson for a 68-yard touchdown that cut the Cowboys’ lead to 10-7.
On the next series, Sauce Gardner dropped a would-be pick-six from Prescott and third-down penalties on defensive end John Franklin-Myers and cornerback Brandin Echols helped the Cowboys score another touchdown to make it 18-7.
Wilson led an 11-play drive just before halftime but when he tried to hit a wide-open Garrett Wilson, Demarcus Lawrence hit the ball as he threw and it fell incomplete.
The Jets kicked a field goal and went into halftime down 18-10.
The Cowboys completely controlled the second half and kicked four field goals.
The Jets managed just 62 yards and their second-half possessions went: punt, fumble, punt, interception, interception, interception.
Dak Prescott threw for two touchdowns in the Cowboys’ victory against the Jets on Sunday. Charles Wenzelberg“There were a lot of opportunities in that first half to kind of change the outlook and just kind of rattle their cages a little bit,” Saleh said. “We did not make a single play, especially in the second half.”
The Jets now must avoid going into a downward spiral as many of their seasons have in the past.
Their brutal opening stretch of games continues Sunday when the Patriots come to MetLife Stadium.
“It won’t snowball,” Saleh said. “It’s not going to snowball. Dallas played a really freaking good game. That’s a good football team. They played about, I feel, as good as you can play.”
As for Wilson, the Jets know fans will beg for the team to make a move at quarterback this week.
But several players, including Garrett Wilson and tight end Tyler Conklin, spoke to him at his locker after the game, telling him they believe in him.
Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson scores a touchdown in the first half of their victory against the Jets on Sunday. Charles Wenzelberg“He’s a completely different player, in my opinion,” Conklin said. “We were just letting him know we have complete trust and faith in him. We’re here for him. We appreciate him. We love him. I think that’s what it comes down to. We’ve got his back no matter what.”
Conklin and the Jets know the noise will get loud this week.
“We’ve got to ignore what the outside world is going to say and come together as a team,” Conklin said. “We’re going to be all right.”
