Hero

Odell Beckham Jr. made up for lost time, turning his long-awaited debut into what will be a long-cherished memory. The rookie receiver and first-round pick finished his first game with four catches for 44 yards, including a game-winning 15-yard touchdown catch — on a brilliant inside move — in the fourth quarter.

Zero

Falcons coach Mike Smith was wrong again. Infamously failing on two fourth-and-1 plays against the Giants in a 2012 playoff loss at the Meadowlands, Smith opted to go for it on fourth-and-1 from his own 29-yard line with 4:40 left in the game, resulting in Matt Ryan being sacked by Johnathan Hankins.

Unsung hero

Rookie running back Andre Williams gave a promising preview of his future, filling in for Rashad Jennings, who left the game with a sprained knee. Williams produced 65 yards on a career-high 20 carries, displaying impressive power on several runs, including a 3-yard touchdown that cut the Giants deficit to 20-17 with 2:05 left in the third quarter.

Key Stat

2 Successful third-down conversions by the Falcons on 13 tries. The Giants also stopped Atlanta on one of its two fourth-down attempts.

Quote of the day

“I’m just thinking in my head, ‘There’s no way that I’m gonna let this one hit the ground.’” — Beckham on his touchdown
