Two years. That is all the time Odell Beckham Jr. has had with Tom Coughlin and all he is going to get, with Coughlin parting ways with the Giants on Monday.
That means Beckham would have another head coach entering his third NFL season. But he will never leave Coughlin behind.
“I love Coach Coughlin,’’ Beckham said Monday in a somber Giants locker room, as players threw their belongings into garbage bags and headed out the door. “He’s always going to be my coach.’’
Beckham has been a sensation on the field, but it has not always been a smooth transition and the veteran head coach at times had to lay down the law with the young receiver. Beckham’s end-zone celebrations as a rookie irked Coughlin. This season, Beckham was suspended one game after he lost control and battled Panthers cornerback Josh Norman.
Coughlin, though, always supported Beckham, and it sounds as if the message hit home.
“It’s been great since the day I met him,’’ Beckham said. “Initially a younger player would immaturely think Coach is always on you. He’s always on you, he’s always on you … why is he always on you? Initially I thought it’s because he wanted to be. It was growing up, maturing, and learning that it was because he knew what was in you, he wanted to bring the best out. And he was going to do everything that he could to do that. Along the journey, it’s been great with Coach as far as growing and learning each other and teaching me things, just how to be a man.’’

With Coughlin gone after 12 years, it will be difficult for the Giants to jettison offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, who in his two seasons has reconfigured the Giants’ offense and greatly benefited Eli Manning.
“He’s been great … also a guy who’s taught me a lot of things,’’ Beckham said of McAdoo. “Having the experience and just being able to teach, and we all have learned and grown to know each other throughout this time. It’s been a lot of fun. Like I said, we don’t know what’s going to happen.’’
If there are wholesale changes to the Giants’ coaching staff?
“It would be difficult,’’ Beckham said. “It’s something that you’re used to — you come in here every day, it’s the same people. It would take time to readjust.’’
