Most of the Giants were a bit astonished to see rookie quarterback Kyle Lauletta take off and score on 10-yard scramble in Friday night’s 30-17 preseason victory in Detroit, using a running back-type cutback to elude two Lions defenders. Most, but not all.

“I knew,’’ defensive lineman Kerry Wynn said. “I don’t know if everybody else knew, Maybe they weren’t watching as much. We didn’t have too many televised games.’’

The “we’’ Wynn refers to is Richmond, the school where Lauletta and Wynn played college football.
“He’s an athlete,’’ Wynn said. “I was telling everybody on the sideline ‘That’s my Richmond guy out there, I told ya.’ ’’

It was a late night/early morning for the Giants. Their itinerary called for a 2:15 a.m. landing in Newark, but their plane was delayed by storms in New Jersey and thus was late getting into Detroit. The Giants landed at 4:20 a.m. and got to their team facility at 5 a.m.

“Have to adjust, no big deal,’’ coach Pat Shurmur said. “Sleep is way overrated, by the way.’’

In what may have been his most meaningful pass of the night, Davis Webb hit tight end Evan Engram for a 7-yard pickup on a third-and-7 to keep a drive alive. Everyone knows Webb has a strong right arm, but it is touch passes that he needs work mastering.

“He’s definitely been improving on that,’’ Engram said. “He knows what he has to fix he knows what the coaches want him to fix. He doesn’t worry about anything else outside of that.’’

Jalen Simmons sustained a concussion. Shurmur said Simmons “was doing well, he was moving around.’’ on Saturday. LB Calvin Munson also has a concussion.

B.W. Webb is on his fifth team in his five-year career, qualifying as an NFL vagabond of sorts. The 27-year old cornerback might have the inside track as the nickelback, as he took snaps there against the Lions and is lining up as the No 3 corner most days in practice.

“Hopefully,’’ Webb said. “I’m putting a lot of work in it, doing a lot of studying with it so I’m hoping that could be my role here and I can help out the defense.’’

Center Jon Halapio said he was surprised and pleased he was named one of the three game-day captains. Halapio was not prepared for the responsibilities that come with the designation though.

“The ref pointed to me and asked if I wanted heads or tails and I just pointed to Landon Collins,’’ Halapio said. “I didn’t want to mess it up.’’

Shurmur said the offensive line improved from the first preseason game.

“I thought they performed better than a week before, aside from the one play where the ball got potentially knocked out of Davis [Webb’s] hand I thought the protection was pretty good,’’ Shurmur said, adding he thought Ereck Flowers “did a good job.’’
