FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The last time the Chiefs and Patriots met is a night most people associated with the Patriots would like to forget — including New England head coach Bill Belichick.
“Go back and look at everything I said right after the game. Do you want something more than that?” Belichick said this week when asked about the 41-14 blowout loss to Kansas City on Sept. 29, 2014. “That was a year and a half ago, so whatever you want I’m sure there’s plenty of. I was asked 1,000 questions about it. If you don’t have access to it, I’m sure you can get the transcripts of that.”
That game sparked questions about whether Tom Brady was finished and led to Belichick’s “on to Cincinnati” catch phrase a few days later. The Patriots turned their season around after that loss and won the Super Bowl. Now, the two teams meet again in the AFC divisional round of the playoffs on Saturday at Gillette Stadium.
The Chiefs have won 11 in a row, the longest streak in the NFL. They shut out the Texans in the wild-card round last week 30-0.
“We wanted to come in and dominate,” Chiefs Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry said. “Right now, we are locked in and ready for next week.”
The Patriots are back where they usually are, hosting a playoff game. New England won the AFC East for the seventh consecutive season and the 12th time in 13 seasons. With a win, the Patriots would advance to their fifth straight AFC title game.
“You’ve got to play your biggest at the biggest moments against the best teams in the toughest conditions,” Brady said. “You’ve got to see what you’re made of. That’s what this tournament is all about.”
The Chiefs are trying to make it to the AFC title game for the second time in team history. The first came in 1993, with Joe Montana at quarterback (the franchise also won three AFL championships before the NFL merger).
Both teams have injuries at key positions. The Patriots expect to have wide receiver Julian Edelman back from a broken foot and left tackle Sebastian Vollmer (ankle). The big question mark is star tight end Rob Gronkowski, who missed practice time this week due to knee and back injuries.
The Chiefs’ main injury question is wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who sprained his ankle in last week’s win. He did not practice much this week and is considered a game-time decision. Maclin led the team with a career-high 87 catches for 1,088 yards and eight touchdowns.

Patriots offensive line vs. Chiefs defensive line
The Chiefs finished fourth in the NFL with 47 sacks this season. Justin Houston led the team (7.5) with Tamba Hali right behind him at 6.5. Both of them are banged up, but expected to play this week.
Justin HoustonGetty ImagesThe Patriots’ offensive line has been a mess all season due to injuries. They have played 13 different combinations and given up 38 sacks. Everyone knows the way to slow down the Patriots’ offense is to bother Tom Brady. It could be the key to Saturday’s game.
“They have some different looks,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. “They don’t need to pressure a lot because they get a lot of pressure with their front, but they do pressure some and that causes problems, too, because they already have a good rush without bringing extra guys. They mix it up, they time up their blitzes and disguise well, so they do a good job. They’ve got a lot of good players and they have a good scheme.”
Former longtime Jets assistant Bob Sutton is the Kansas City defensive coordinator and surely will have some creative rushes for the Patriots to deal with.
4 Downs
Streaking Chiefs: Kansas City has not lost since October, winning 11 straight. They started the season 1-5 and turned it around to get a wild-card berth. Early in the season, the Chiefs were missing cornerback Sean Smith because of a suspension. They also lost running back Jamaal Charles in Week 5. Adjusting to those absences had something to do with the turnaround, but they also received help from the schedule. Six of their first seven games were against teams that ended up making the playoffs, but the Chiefs played just one playoff team in their final nine games.
“There’s no excuse, first of all, to start 1-5. I’ve never had that experience,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “But, looking back now, we had a lot of younger players playing, more than anybody in the league at that time, and we had some guys coming off injury and sickness and a suspension in one case. They all got back in and kind of got in the swing of things. The young guys grew up a little bit, and we put together a couple wins.”
Playoff Pats: Patriots are in the playoffs for the seventh straight season and Gillette Stadium is home to another postseason game. The Patriots are 17-4 at home in the postseason all time, and 6-1 in their last seven games there. Their home record is the second-best mark in NFL history of teams who have played a minimum of 10 games.
New England has won its last four divisional round playoff games, with its last loss coming in 2010 to the Jets. Patriots coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady have combined for the most playoff wins (21) of any coach/quarterback duo in NFL history.
Travis KelceGetty ImagesTravis time: The Chiefs’ offense may be hurting if Jeremy Maclin (ankle) can’t play. But the target the Patriots may be most worried about is tight end Travis Kelce, who had 72 catches for 875 yards and five touchdowns this season. Last week in Houston, Kelce had eight catches for 128 yards. He has become quarterback Alex Smith’s favorite target.
“He’s a good player,” Patriots safety Devin McCourty said. “Yards after the catch, he’s only behind Gronk [Rob Gronkowski], so I think that speaks for itself. Whatever as a team we think of Gronk, this guy is right there. I think it’s like three yards that separates them. He makes tough catches, he gets the ball in his hands, he makes plays, so [he’s] definitely one of their best weapons offensively. So we’ll have to know where he’s at.”
What’s up Gronk? There was a lot of mystery around Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski this week. He missed practice on Tuesday and Thursday and was limited on Wednesday. There were conflicting reports about how serious his knee injury is. ESPN reported Gronkowski had received painkilling shots in the knee, but NFL Network said he had not.
The Patriots, of course, were tight-lipped about how bad Gronkowksi’s injury is and even what exactly it was. On Thursday, they added a back injury to the official injury report for the tight end. Some believe this is just Patriots subterfuge, aimed to make the Chiefs wonder about how much Gronkowski will play.
Costello’s call
The Chiefs come into this game rolling, but the streak ends here. The Patriots have had a few weeks to get healthy and should be back to their old selves. Gillette Stadium is a nightmare for opponents. This one is close, but Tom Brady finds a way in the fourth quarter.
Patriots 27, Chiefs 21
