The Patriots (12-4) stunningly lost their chance at a first-round bye on Sunday with their loss to the lowly Dolphins and the Chiefs’ win over the Chargers.
Miami journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a five-yard touchdown to Mike Gesicki with 24 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give the Dolphins (5-11) a 27-24 win on the final weekend of the regular season.
Kansas City also is 12-4, but owns the tiebreaker over New England due to its Week 14 win over Tom Brady and company.
The Patriots, which will play on wild-card weekend for the first time since 2009, will now host either the Titans, Steelers or Raiders. The Texans will host the Bills in the other wild-card game.
The Baltimore Ravens (13-2) are the top seed in the AFC.
Meanwhile, the NFC is still waiting for the Cowboys and Eagles to determine the fourth divisional champion as both teams were playing late afternoon.
Philadelphia will get into the postseason with either a win over the Giants or a Dallas loss to the Redskins, while Dallas needs to win and have the Eagles lose.
