Giants receivers coach Sean Ryan joked that Victor Cruz getting back to his former self has raised expectations through the roof and put more pressure on him as a coach. But he was completely serious when he insisted the only thing standing between Rueben Randle and being a complete wideout was consistency.
“Rueben’s got a lot of the tools already,” Ryan said. “ He’s got the tools to be a complete receiver. It’s every single play, every time he’s in whether it’s practice or a game, he’s got to give us 100 percent effort and be focused on it. He’s got the tools in place.’’
Randle has flown under the radar with Odell Beckham Jr. coming off his stellar rookie campaign and Cruz back from his torn patella. But after the former second-round pick was benched twice last year — against the Jaguars for being late to a meeting, and again against the Redskins — Ryan claims the fourth-year receiver finally is learning his lesson.
“Rueben’s been working hard,” Ryan said. “He’s done everything we’ve asked of him, whether it was in the spring or now coming back to camp. I feel good moving forward. To me, the past is the past. We’re looking at 2015 and what’s in front of us. Lessons have been learned and I expect nothing but the best from him this year.’’
If so, that bodes well for the Giants’ receiving corps, Randle posting career-highs of 71 catches for 938 yards last season to pick up the slack after Cruz’s injury.
“To me, with all these guys it goes back to consistency,” Ryan said. “You have to make sure it’s there every play. But he can fool you sometimes, because he’s a competitive guy. He can fool you because of his demeanor. But he’s competitive, and we’re working to get better at that every day.’’
Ryan praised Beckham Jr. for working hard to get better every day despite his Offensive Rookie of the Year debut, and he also said Cruz is looking good.
“To be honest, I saw signs of the old Victor as far back as the spring, watching him work out with the training staff,” Ryan said. “I think his movement was good. What’s most important to me was how confident he feels getting in and out of breaks, and he’s got that.
“It’s great to get those guys back and working them in. Like Coach [Tom] Coughlin told you, we were being careful with them. They’re on a pitch count. We’re working them smart, but getting them back out there, moving around.’’
Asked if it were a dream to have both Pro Bowl wideouts under his charge, Ryan quipped, “Yes, you always want expectations through the roof and that kind of pressure. It’s a dream.”
