Jets coach Rex Ryan was upset to hear Fireman Ed is stepping aside.

“I was disappointed,” Ryan said. “I love that guy’s passion and energy he would bring. He’s a great fan. I really admire him. He was great. If we do our job on the field, that ‘Jets’ chant will continue.”

Ed Anzalone announced Sunday night that he would no longer lead the “J-E-T-S” chants at home games. He has become the most well-known Jets fan, but said the situation in the stands has become too hostile to continue as Fireman Ed.

“I like Fireman Ed,” Ryan said. “If he could play linebacker, I’d use him.”

The Jets are home this week against the Cardinals.
