Rex Ryan had seen enough to pull Mark Sanchez from Sunday’s 7-6 win over the Cardinals, but as of Monday afternoon he had not seen enough to make a decision about a starting quarterback going forward.
“I think right now, I definitely need a little more time to make that decision,” Ryan told reporters at his Monday press conference at the Jets practice facility. “I’m comfortable and confident with all three quarterbacks. I think all three guys have, now, proven they can win it this league.”
In the third quarter against the Cardinals, Ryan pulled Sanchez for Greg McElroy, who in the first drive of his NFL career, got the Jets the seven points they would need to win. McIlroy finished the game 5-for-7, totaling 27 yards and touchdown.
The regular backup, Tim Tebow, was not active because of a rib injury.
Ryan made it clear that the current decision he has to make at quarterback is not just between Sanchez and McIlroy, but Tebow is also a viable option if he is healthy.
“I’m just saying this: when you look at Tim, he is a proven winning quarterback in this league,” Ryan said. “I think each game is different. When you look at who you play, the opponent you’re playing, you make a decision on what gives us the best chance to be successful and to twin. And this week it’s going to be about competing and beating [2-10] Jacksonville, and that’s what will go into all decisions.”
Ryan said he is going to consult his staff, and believes he should have a decision by Tuesday night, after watching tape of the Jaguars. He believes by Wednesday’s practice, there should be a clear-cut No. 1 quarterback.
“There a lot of tough decision you make as a coach,” Ryan said. “A lot of times it’s easier when you put [forward] the three priorities: the team, the team, the team. You’ve got to take away personal feelings and whatever, because it’s bigger than me or this person or that person.”
