Coming out of retirement to join the Buccaneers had nothing to do with Tom Brady, according to Rob Gronkowski.
On Sunday, the 30-year-old tight end posted a Mother’s Day tribute to his mom and grandma on Instagram, joking his true Tampa Bay intentions were about staying close to home.
“Both my Mom and Grandma are just super happy I’ll be down the block from them playing now! I was just trying to get closer to my Mom and Grandma cause I am such a good boy and I wouldn’t be here without them!!” Gronkowski wrote.
In March, Brady signed a two-year, $50 million deal with the Buccaneers in free agency after 20 seasons in New England. A month later, the Patriots traded Gronkowski to Tampa Bay.
Although the seeds for a possible Brady reunion had been planted months prior, Gronkowski — who announced his NFL retirement last year — quipped he nearly headed south ahead of time.
“I almost moved in with Grandma because I was retired like her, and she told me all her friends think I am cute, then she told me I was to [sic] young to do that!” Gronkowski wrote.
In response to Gronkowski’s post, his brother Chris joked: “Grandma is already rocking the bucs gear.”
Gronkowski will wear No. 87 on the Buccaneers.
