The Jets will be missing quarterback Sam Darnold for at least one more week.

Coach Adam Gase said Wednesday that Darnold will not play Sunday against the Dolphins, the second game he’ll miss since suffering a shoulder injury in Week 4. Joe Flacco will start again in Miami.

“I think he’s better than what he was last week,” Gase said of Darnold. “I think the more time we give him, the better he’ll feel. I think he’s taking the steps that we need him to take to give us an opportunity into next week. We’ll be able to make that decision when we get there.”

Darnold sprained the AC joint in his right shoulder in a loss to the Broncos on Oct. 1. He was slammed to the MetLife Stadium turf by Denver linebacker Alexander Johnson. He returned to finish the game but has not played since. Darnold said he has begun to throw “slowly but surely getting back into it.”

“I’m progressing. Just taking it one day at a time right now,” Darnold said. “I feel like the shoulder is gaining a ton of range of motion, which is good, but again just taking it one day at a time right now.”

Gase sounded hopeful he could return next week to face the Bills.

“I think he’s doing a good job of communicating and letting us know how he feels,” Gase said. “It’s not what I want to hear. He’s being honest as far as his pain tolerance, his range of motion, how he feels, him being able to work on his throwing motion a little bit these last few days is a real big positive. I do think he’s a quick healer. There’s no doubt none of us would say he’s anything but tough. We just want to make sure that he’s good before we put him out there.”

Gase said Monday he would consider giving up play-calling duties, but opted against it after conversations with several people in the organization, including general manager Joe Douglas.

“That was something I brought up to those guys, and they didn’t feel like that was the right move,” Gase said.

WR Breshad Perriman practiced on a limited basis Wednesday for the first time since spraining an ankle against the 49ers in Week 2. Perriman and Gase both said they are hopeful he can play Sunday against the Dolphins.

Rookie WR Denzel Mims (hamstring) was designated to return to practice from injured reserve. The team now has 21 days to activate him.

Rookie LT Mekhi Becton (shoulder) and LG Alex Lewis (shoulder) did not practice. … CB Bless Austin (calf), DL John Franklin-Myers (foot) and DL Quinnen Williams (hamstring) were limited. … In addition to Mims, the Jets designated CB Arthur Maulet and OL Cameron Clark to return to practice from IR. … WR Donte Moncrief was released from the practice squad, and K/P Sergio Castillo and DL Tanzel Smart were signed.
