One day after Saquon Barkley’s mother posted that her son’s ACL surgery was a “success,” staff and players with the Giants relayed that the injured running back was in good spirits despite having to miss the rest of the season due to his knee injury.
Joe Judge said Giants VP of medical services Ronnie Barnes spoke with Barkley’s Los Angeles-based surgeon, Dr. Neal ElAttrache, and “it sounds like it was a positive deal” with the surgery.
“Obviously, we’ll know more as time goes on and his rehab starts. But it seems like he’s in good spirits,” Judge said of Barkley. “We’re looking forward to getting him back over here on this side of the country.”
Wide receiver Sterling Shepard said he spoke with Barkley on Friday. “He’s doing good, he’s in good spirits,” Shepard said. “He seemed to be doing great to me.”
Saquon Barkley following surgerytonya1156/InstagramShepard acknowledged the video of himself, Barkley, quarterback Daniel Jones and other teammates going out to dinner in Manhattan the previous week and not wearing masks was “something we dealt with internally and we talked to Coach about,” before adding “that’s all I’ve got to say about that.”
To that end, Judge has not announced who will replace left guard Will Hernandez on Monday night against Tampa Bay after he tested positive for COVID-19, although it likely will be rookie fifth-round pick Shane Lemieux.
Asked for an update on Hernandez, Judge said: “I have not seen him personally. Obviously, we’ve all been isolated from him. We’ll check back in and see how he’s doing. Any health ailments, they go directly through Ronnie Barnes. To me, no news is good news when it comes to our players and situations like this.”
Running back Davonta Freeman (ankle) has been ruled out, meaning Wayne Gallman likely will be the featured back against the Bucs. Three-time 1,000-yard rusher Alfred Morris also could be activated from the practice squad.
Before practice, Judge said Freeman had “a chance” to be in uniform Monday night.
