While the Saquon Barkley-to-the-Giants hype continues to build, the one man who could easiest play spoiler sent a reminder of that Thursday afternoon.
Browns general manager John Dorsey said he hasn’t ruled out taking the Penn State running back with the No. 1 pick in next week’s NFL draft.
“Absolutely,” Dorsey told reporters in Cleveland. “Why wouldn’t I? The guy’s a really good football player. You can’t have enough good football players.”
This week Sports Illustrated said Barkley’s agency wants him to “pull an Eli Manning and demand that the Browns not draft him,” to ensure he goes to the Giants, though his agent shot that down, according to cleveland.com.
Dorsey also claimed he would still be open to trading the top pick, allowing another team to swoop in to steal Barkley or take the quarterback of its choice ahead of the Giants at No. 2.
Reports have surfaced that the Browns are eyeing Wyoming QB Josh Allen at No. 1, including Sports Illustrated, which cited a “friend of Dorsey.” The GM shot down that idea, saying he goes dark at this time of the year.
“I’m going to consider all options,” Dorsey said. “I’m going to try to do what’s best for this organization. I still have seven days before the draft. I still have to go through some of the processes. My phone’s still on. The power’s still on.”
