Johnny Manziel’s regular-season CFL debut could be coming soon.
Following Manziel’s trade Sunday from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to the Montreal Alouttes, head coach Mike Sherman introduced the 2014 first-round draft pick Monday, noting the quarterback may have an opportunity to play in the not-so-distant future.
“This is quite a short week,” Sherman said, per ESPN. “We’ll just see how the week plays out. I don’t want to put added pressure on him and I want everybody else to get ready to play. We’ll just play it out during the course of the week.”
Manziel, 25, who signed a two-year deal with Hamilton in May, was the No. 2 quarterback on the Tiger-Cats’ depth chart behind starter Jeremiah Masoli. Hamilton is second in the CFL East standings at 2-3, while Montreal is in the basement at 1-4.
“We didn’t bring him here to sit on the bench,” Sherman said of Manziel.
The two have history together, as Sherman previously coached at Texas A&M and recruited the quarterback to play for him starting in 2011, Sherman’s last season with the team after getting buried with the Tiger-Cats from the very start.
As for Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, he’s ready to make the most of his new home.
“I feel confident in the abilities I’m bringing to this team,” Manziel said, according to Pro Football Talk. “It is a team sport so it’s going to take each and every person to go out there and be successful on game day. I’m looking forward to what the future holds.
“I don’t expect to come in here right away and have everything figured out, but at the end of the day I know Coach Sherman and I trust Coach Sherman and the leader he is to put me in a good situation.”
The Alouettes face the Edmonton Eskimos on Thursday night.
