The Rams might “Free Gurley” as early as this week.

Pro Football Talk reported on Thursday that “the Rams are currently in discussions regarding a possible trade of RB Todd Gurley.”

This aligns with a report from NFL Network’s Michael Silver that the Rams “want to move forward without [Gurley].”

“They may cut him if they can’t find a trading partner when all is said and done,” Silver wrote on Twitter.

Gurley, 25, was selected 10th overall by the Rams in the 2015 NFL Draft. He rushed for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns in his rookie season, earning him the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

After a lackluster sophomore season, the former Georgia Bulldog was awarded the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2017. He signed a blockbuster four-year, $60 million contract extension with $45 million guaranteed in 2018, which made him the highest-paid running back in the NFL at the time.

The three-time Pro Bowler was held out of the final two games of the 2018 season due to knee inflammation and was used sparingly in a playoff run to the Super Bowl, prompting concerns about his long-term durability. Gurley also suffered a torn ACL during his junior year at Georgia.

In his absence, backup C.J. Anderson stepped in and produced respectable numbers.

In 2019, the Rams utilized a three-back committee consisted of Gurley, Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson. Gurley finished the season with 857 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.

He carries a 2020 cap hit of $17.25 million with a dead-cap hit of $12.6 million, according to Spotrac.
