Tony Romo was nursing something of a broken heart before his first start with the Dallas Cowboys, according to Al Michaels.

During Sunday night’s game between the Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles — in which Dallas rookie Ben DiNucci made his first start at quarterback — Michaels recalled a past encounter with Romo, who also made his first start on “Sunday Night Football.”

Prior to the Cowboys’ kickoff against the Carolina Panthers in 2006, Michaels inquired about Romo’s personal life, leading the quarterback to reveal he had recently been broken up with, per Larry Brown Sports.

Michaels then questioned if Romo’s former flame was aware of his game-day status, but the quarterback allegedly noted his ex — who was venturing into a medical field — had no interest.

DiNucci told Michaels that he is still with his girlfriend.

Romo, who joined the Cowboys in 2003 as an undrafted rookie free agent, defeated the Panthers in his primetime debut, 35-14. He spent 14 seasons in Dallas before retiring in 2017, later entering the broadcast booth at CBS.

During his time with the Cowboys, Romo infamously romanced Jessica Simpson from 2007 to 2009. He married former beauty queen Candice Crawford in 2011. They share three sons: Hawkins, 8, Rivers, 6, and Jones, 3.
