Here are five players to watch as the Jets open training camp:
Sam Darnold
The rookie quarterback will be under the microscope in this camp. The Jets are going to give Darnold every chance to prove he should be the Week 1 starter. Can he do it? Expect Darnold to get plenty of reps in practices and the preseason games as the Jets take a long look at him. It will be interesting to see how he handles the pressure of going against live defenses when that comes. Turnovers were an issue at USC. Will they be again in training camp? The Jets think they landed their franchise quarterback. We’ll see what the early returns show.
Teddy Bridgewater
Darnold is not the only quarterback who will get plenty of attention in the coming weeks. Bridgewater is an intriguing player. He looked like he was on his way to becoming a longtime starting quarterback with the Vikings before suffering a gruesome knee injury two years ago. That injury has kept him off the field for most of two seasons. Now, he’s trying to come back with the Jets. If he can play, he could be a trading chip, or maybe the team decides he is a better option than Darnold or Josh McCown.
Quincy EnunwaBill KostrouQuincy Enunwa
Big things were expected from Enunwa entering last year after a breakout season in 2016. A neck injury in training camp ended Enunwa’s season before it could start. Nearly a year removed from neck surgery, Enunwa will be back on the field with the Jets trying to reclaim a leading role in the offense. Enunwa says he is fully healthy and was running around in the spring like he was 100 percent. The test will be when the pads come on and he takes some hits. If Enunwa returns to form, the Jets could have a strong group of wideouts.
Trumaine Johnson
Though Darnold will get more headlines, Johnson may be the offseason addition who has a quicker impact. The cornerback signed a five-year, $72.5 million contract in March, hoping he can solidify the secondary and free up coach Todd Bowles to be more aggressive with his blitz calls. The Jets still lack a true edge rusher, but Bowles might be able to scheme up a pass rush if he can count on Johnson taking away the opponent’s top receiver.
Darron Lee
The third-year linebacker is a key piece of a Jets defense that enters the season with big expectations. The Jets feel like they have improved their secondary and are confident in their line. If Lee is able to make a leap this season and be a force in the middle along with Avery Williamson, the defense has a chance to be very good. Lee showed flashes last year of being a good player, especially late in the year. But his coverage is sometimes lacking and he sometimes does not get off blocks. This is not a make-or-break year for him, but it’s pretty close.
