Alexis Lafreniere can’t wait to step on Broadway.
“Hi Rangers fans, I’m really excited to be a part of the Rangers and to meet you,” Lafreniere said moments after being selected first overall Tuesday in the 2020 NHL Draft. “I hope you have a great night and can’t wait to see you.”
The selection came as no surprise after the Rangers in August won the NHL Draft lottery, otherwise known as the “Alexis Lafreniere Sweeptakes.”
Lafreniere, who will turn 19 next week, is projected to become a franchise left winger and is expected to make an impact next season, which the league said it is aiming to begin Jan. 1.
The 6-foot-1 Canadian scored 35 goals and had 112 points in 52 games last season for Rimouski Oceanic of the QMJHL, one of the top Canadian junior leagues that has funneled multiple players to the NHL.
“Throwing on a Rangers jersey, it’s pretty amazing.” Lafreniere told NBC Sports.
