And they’re off…

The lounge of the MSG Training Facility in Greenburgh, NY is covered in wall-to-wall plush, dark-blue carpeting. So Brandon Dubinsky, all of 22 years old and 88 NHL games, was laying down and testing its comfort while all of the fresh-faced rookies (who are all just about his age, if not younger) sat in leather sofas and looked on.
Chris Drury
When Drury came out to address the media today, he looked so calm it
was almost like he was a different person (not that the perpetual winner is ever really neverous). Often when talking to Drury last year in a one-on-one situation, he was very affable and engaging. Once a crowd surrounded him, he seemed to choose his words with a lot more precision, as is prudent in New York.
But there he sat today on a black leather chair with his legs cordially crossed, cameras surrounding him and voice recorders in his face, being as candid as ever.
âWhen I got here [last year], I was coming from the team that just beat them [Buffalo], where I played a big role,â Drury said. âThere wasnât any real tension, but I wanted to make sure I didnât step on any toes.â
Strange how that was volunteered by Drury, explaining why he started last year as a a rather quiet guy with the media.
âIâm no longer the new guy,â he continued. âI know what itâs like now, and if any of these guys need something, they can come to me with questions.â
Of course, Gomez never was, and probably never will be shy. âWhen we got here, Scotty kinda jumped right in and was playing off the bat,â Drury said.
In turn, Gomez decided to jump right into his first day of this season with the media. Asked about a more prominent leadership role, he quipped, âYea, Iâll tell a guy to f— off now.â
And as a leader, as loose as he may be off the ice, Gomezâs sights are set on one goal.
âStanley Cup,â he said. âAny thing else and weâre falling short.â
Shanahan
Nothing. There is nothing new on the Shanahan front, and when Tom Renney was asked about it, he took it as exactly as you would expect him to.
âItâs one of those situations now where my total focus, really, in the last week or so has been completely on what we can do to prepare our team for training camp,â Renney said. âAt this stage in the game, itâs hard to suggest anything more. . . I have the mindset that this is the team Iâm going to go into the season with.â
Really doesnât sound so bad.
Personnel
All of the questions posed about who is going to make the team, who are the frontrunners, and who will even make the trip to Europe are still uncertain. I think some of that will be answered tomorrow when the team starts skating and some things get organized.
The way training camp and the exhibition schedule will be run is by dividing the 64 players who were invited to camp into three âteamsâ: Red, White and Blue. The separations will allow Renney to juggle line combinations and as evaluate the young talent for what are maybe of couple open roster spots at forward.
âWe have an abundance of people at the forward position that would lend itself to competition,â Renney said. âThatâs something we have to take very seriously.
âThe numbers on the contracts might suggest otherwise,â he continued, âbut thereâs jobs to be had.â
I think this will be the most interesting part of camp and the competition at forward is something that Iâm going to keep a close eye on in the coming days.
New Rangers
The Rangersâ biggest off-season pickups, defenseman Wade Redden and winger Markus Naslund, spoke with the media yesterday, both of them seeming at ease with the large swarm of attention (wait until theyâve lost a couple in a row).
Redden was asked about his ability to come into New York and adjust, contrasting what most people do (including what both Drury and Gomez have admitted to doing last year) and try too hard to do things theyâre not used to.
Markus Naslund
âWhen I had my most success personally, I played with two guys I meshed real well with,â Naslund said. âIâm not worried that Iâll be put in a spot [here] where I canât play my game. I think thereâs enough talent that whoever they put me with Iâll be good.â
And on replacing Jaromir Jagr?
âIn my mind, I donât think thatâs very fair,â he said. âI think heâs one of the best players to play the game and Iâm not going to be able to fill his shoes. Iâll do my best but itâs going to be a team effort and thatâs going to be what we focus on.â
A team effort that will actually take the ice tomorrow. Check back during the day for live updates.
