The current Devils team is tough, and everybody involved knows it.

That includes goalie Martin Brodeur, who hasn’t played a game since Nov. 4 because of a torn left biceps and is anxiously awaiting his return, which will come sometime in the next two weeks, but not tonight in Uniondale against the Islanders (7:00, MSG Plus, MSG Plus 2).

“Guys are pulling for each other and playing for each other,” Brodeur said after fielding shots for about 40 minutes from the three players that showed up to the optional workout. “We’re finding ways to win and it shows the quality of the team when you win different ways.”

One of those ways is by sheer will, as the Devils showed on Thursday night in Tampa by coming back from a two-goal deficit to beat the Lightning, 3-2, in a shootout.

In the third period, the game-tying goal was scored when a deflected puck hit Travis Zajac in the face, requiring 11 stitches on his upper lip, and was put home by Zach Parise. Parise missed the last 10 minutes of the second period because he was lying down in the locker room flu-like symptoms.

“To be quite honest, I was completely shocked when [Parise] was getting his equipment on to start the third period,” coach Brent Sutter said. “And then [Zajac] comes right back after getting stitched up. Yeah, it certainly tells you a lot about the individuals.”

As the Devils continue their romp up the standings – 14-3-0 in their past 17 and before last night tied with Washington for second in the Eastern Conference – Brodeur said he is hoping his return doesn’t spoil the chemistry.

“I think it’s really a challenge for me to not play for a while and then to go out and compete at the highest level of the league that’s going,” Brodeur said. “It’s definitely been a joy to watch and for me to come back and not have the stress of a playoffs situation makes it easier. They definitely have built up something great, and I don’t see why that can’t continue.”
