Turns out that coach David Quinn is OK with Larry David thinking his Rangers are pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty bad.
Quinn had a jokingly sharp response for the creator of “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” who went on “The Michael Kay Show” on ESPN Radio Wednesday and leveled some criticism at Quinn and his handling of the young team this season.
“Listen, I’ve watched a few bad ‘Seinfelds’ and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasms,’ too,” Quinn said Thursday morning to many laughs. “I still love Larry David and his work.”
David had a hilarious appearance on Kay’s show, going back and forth with co-host Don La Greca, who is also the part-time play-by-play man for Rangers radio broadcasts.
“I can’t believe I’m breaking down hockey with Larry David,” La Greca said.
David was critical of Quinn’s benching of 18-year-old rookie Kaapo Kakko for part of the third period in Calgary this past Thursday, Kakko having taken a bad penalty while the Rangers were down a goal.
“Why did they bench [Kaapo] Kakko in that third period after he scored — his first goal in 14 games, and an assist — he benches him because he takes a bad penalty? Come on, that’s ridiculous,” David said. “You don’t think he knows he took a bad penalty? He knows. Benching him isn’t going to do anything. They need another goal.”
When La Greca said that Quinn has done a good job — and Kay called him a “homer” — David responded with, “You are such a fraud!”
Quinn laughed when it was brought up Thursday morning, appropriately before a game with El Diablo — er, the Devils. (It was unclear if David Puddy would be painting his chest to support the team.) Quinn said he thought it was funny, even if he was the butt of the joke.
“It made me laugh,” Quinn said. “Good for him, he’s a fan. It’s coaching, if your feelings get hurt easily, do not get into coaching.”
