That’s one down, a handful to go.

According to a report by Darren Dreger of the news outlet TSN in Canada, the Oilers are set to hire Dallas Eakins as their new coach today. Eakins was one of the prime candidates to be the Rangers’ next coach in the wake of John Tortorella’s firing last Wednesday, and the Blueshirts had already received permission to speak to him. It’s unknown if a formal interview with Eakins was ever done, as the Rangers are set to being their organizational meetings this week out in La Quinta, Calif.

On Saturday, the Oilers fired Ralph Krueger after one season behind the Edmonton bench, the team’s seventh year in a row without making the playoffs. Eakins is one of the hottest coaching prospects in the league, excelling as the headman of the AHL’s Toronto Marlies for the past three seasons.

The Rangers have a couple more candidates lined up for interviews, if they haven’t already taken place. Atop the list of experienced coaches is former Canucks coach Alain Vigneault, a former Jack Adams Award winner. He is possibly followed by long-time Sabres coach Lindy Ruff, and Rangers’ icon (yet inexperienced coach) Mark Messier.

There have also been rumblings that Penguins coach Dan Bylsma might get fired after his team was eliminated by the Bruins in the Eastern Conference final on Saturday. If that is the case, he would presumably jump to the top of the Rangers’ most-wanted list.
