A month of street art has been mostly sealed off, carted away, painted over or defaced by other graffiti artists. The Banksy faithful are getting their souvenir T-shirts printed up. Just another sign that the anonymous Brit remains a bit tone-deaf about this city. That’s what happens when you spend your month here scampering around in the dark."}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"So, what did it all add up to?"}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"For spontaneous graphic wit, he was terrific. Banksy is a master at transforming ordinary street features into comical tableaux. Take the one of the boy swinging a mallet. Banksy turns a common standpipe and alarm into one of those test-your-strength carnival games. A stenciled-in priest’s head transforms a section of culvert into a confession booth. Merely adding two little figures and a twisted tree, he changes a mundane brick arch into a charming Japanese garden bridge."}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Nobody is better at this kind of street magic."}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Curiously, his most powerful protest piece was not graffiti, but performance: the truckload of squealing stuffed animals that drove through the Meatpacking District and other neighborhoods (inset). It skewered a universal hypocrisy: that the livestock we routinely cart off to slaughter are the same moo-cows and piggies that we encourage our children to adore."}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Public art is always a dialogue with a place and its residents. Two things about New York changed the conversation for Banksy: It is the world’s art capital and it has its own homegrown graffiti tradition."}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"New York graffiti, like hip-hop music, came out of the city’s poorer neighborhoods. It owes its form to the invention of aerosol spray paint, which easily produces bold gestural swaths of color."}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Banksy, though he uses spray paint, too (albeit with stencils), does a much different kind of graffiti, drawing on a tradition going back to the jokes, caricatures and naughty cartoons of the ancient world."}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"New York graffiti, with its elaborate, almost indecipherable tags, is about style. It’s abstract. Banksy’s graffiti is about message. It’s representational. The two were bound to clash. On day two, Banksy tweaked the local vernacular with “This is my New York accent.” He wrote it in the chaotic, jostling letters used by the less accomplished writers, the stuff that appears at a low height all over the city, because it’s done by kids who can’t reach any higher. Below it, in smooth mechanical script, he wrote “. . . Normally, I talk like this,” and it’s hard not to hear a condescending British accent in that."}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"If he didn’t make any friends among local graffiti writers, Banksy probably made fewer in the art establishment. New York is filled with artists, curators, dealers, art advisors, collectors and critics, all of whose incomes depend on the very, very serious business of contemporary art. Banksy, working entirely outside the system, has managed to build a bigger name for himself than all the art-fair darlings, including his fellow countryman Damien Hirst — he of the dead shark in the big tank."}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Not that Banksy ignored the shock-of-the-new strategies of the avant garde or the reflexive ironies of postmodernists. He borrowed from them, just as he borrowed his stenciling technique from the Frenchman Blek Le Rat. From Andy Warhol, he took the most important lesson: that it doesn’t matter whether you make art, so long as you make news."}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"Banksy updated that principle for the digital age, creating a new form of non-institutional public art that has enormous appeal to a new generation. Its allure is that you can change the world by putting your ideas on a wall. And, through the amplification of YouTube, Instagram and other social media, those wall scribblings can even bring you fame and fortune."}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"But, in the end, it all looked a bit rushed. Something was missing from this chain of tricks. Perhaps it was the aura of daredevil risk, that touch of drama that you expect from a defiant street artist. You never wondered — how did he do that without getting caught? Most of it was done at street level and was modest in size. He left us with no really great pieces, nothing on a grand enough scale to warrant cries for preservation, nothing like Keith Haring’s “Crack is Wack” graffito on the Harlem River Drive."}},{"type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"In a way, the T-shirt says it all.
