A year ago, cheating on my favorite barista with my own coffee machine would have felt like a mortal sin.

Stopping on my way to work for my $7 almond milk latte was a core part of my morning ritual. I was hooked on the smooth, velvety flavor and the fact that it was always the perfect temperature.

I’d been loyal to my local coffee spot for a long time, and always knew it was an expensive habit. But, until I crunched the numbers, I didn’t realize just how costly. Finally, inspired by the No-Buy January trend, I decided it was time to call quits and get a real adult espresso machine.

After a few friends nudged me towards the premium Italian De’Longhi brand, I settled on the Magnifica Evo Automatic Espresso and Coffee Machine. While this machine typically retails for over $700, it’s currently marked-down to $549 on Amazon. Plus, the return on the investment is huge if you actually use it.

And believe it or not, the coffee is incredible. Like barista-level incredible. And the best part? I’m not losing my mind when I can’t get to my favorite coffee spot during the winter storm; I get to enjoy the cup of my choice from the comfort of home.

Despite my initial fears that I wouldn’t know how to work it, I found the Magnifica incredibly easy to set up and operate. It arrived in a compact box with an instruction manual and everything clearly labeled. I could place most parts intuitively — the water tray, milk frother and drip container just slid right into place.

From there, you plug in the machine, load up your beans or pre-ground, and you’re essentially ready to go. The biggest learning curve was probably finding the perfect grind level.

The Magnifica comes with a conical burr grinder with 13 settings, so every bean variety is perfectly extracted. You can adjust the dial to customize the consistency, but it takes a bit of trial and error. Now that I’ve got my go-to Lavazza Super Crema Beans, I’ve dialed in the exact grind strength for that smooth, honey-like drip.

My favorite part of this machine is the versatility; I can still switch things up whenever I want by selecting from the icons on the display panel. From velvety cappuccinos to foamy lattes, refreshing iced coffee and even a simple glass of tea, the Magnifica does it all and saves me tons of time waiting in line.

Of course, I still have to take care of it by emptying the drip tray and giving it a deep clean once in a while — but to me, that tradeoff is completely worth it. Besides, with the auto-clean function and the detachable, dishwasher-safe parts, it’s not really much heavy-lifting.

Now that I’m in the habit of making my coffee exactly how I like it, I have zero urge to throw $7 at someone else to do it for me. Whether you’re trying to break an expensive habit or just looking for the time and convenience, the Magnifica is a machine I can wholeheartedly recommend.
