St. Joseph by the Sea won its first-ever CHSAA Class AA intersectional title last June, beating Xavier in the final at Kaiser Stadium.
Can the Vikings repeat? Will Xavier, which returns 14 players, win its first ‘AA’ championship? Will Xaverian return to its past glory? Or will another team emerge victorious at St. John’s in June?
There’s plenty of questions in what should be a wide-open year. We have the first answers of the year with The Post’s CHSAA preseason top 10.
1. St. Joseph by the Sea (0-0)
The pressure is on the defending champions, but there isn’t a player on the varsity who hasn’t played, and won, big games last year. While Anthony Battaglia, Vin Garcia and Chris Falcone are among the returning players from the first-ever varsity championship squad, Liam Vogt, Vinny Yodice, Frank Muraca and Brian Russell all won a JV city title last year. Coach Gordon Rugg’s lone concern, thus far, is the offense.

2. Xaverian (0-0)
The Clippers have no real weaknesses, according to second-year coach Lou Piccola, which is a scary proposition for opponents this year. Pittsburgh-bound catcher Elvin Soto is one of the top players in the city and is one of several key returners. The brothers Pastrana – Steven and Anthony – are part of a deep and dangerous pitching staff which has less than a 1.00 ERA in the preseason.

3. Xavier (0-0)
Xavier played in its first-ever Class AA intersectional title game last June, losing to St. Joseph by the Sea in the final. Fourteen players, and just about the entire starting lineup that day, returns, meaning expectations are heightened. Lafayette-bound James McCool anchors the veteran squad, which also features junior left-hander Nicky DiLeo.

4. Fordham Prep (0-0)
Two years ago, the Rams won the Class AA intersectional title and, after falling short last spring, second-year head coach Pat Deane thinks Fordham Prep has the talent to get back to Kaiser Stadium again. It helps, of course, to have one of the most feared sluggers in the league in Seton Hall-bound first baseman Sal Annunziata and an experienced and deep pitching staff featuring Jimmy McCormack, Andrew Pucillo, Alex Depasquale, Matt DiLecce and Elio Fernandez.

5. St. Raymond (0-0)
It’s a new era in Castle Hill with Marc DeLuca taking over for legendary Ron Patnosh, who retired after 45 years as head coach. But the Ravens, who won the Bronx/Manhattan division title and reached the Class AA intersectional semifinals last year, should again be contenders with sluggers Manny Rivera and Jon Crucey back, joining several newcomers who helped guide the JV team to the Bronx/Manhattan division title.

6. Moore Catholic (0-0)
Virtually everyone returns from a young, inexperienced Moore team, which could contend for the Staten Island division title with St. Joseph by the Sea. Lefty John Baggs, Dom Casella and Anthony Lobello are back and they’re joined by transfers Matt Kostalos and Chris Goetz on a deep pitching staff. Rob Ortiz, Shea Spitzbarth, Frank Smith, Joe Todaro and sophomore Matt DiOrio, who coach Nick Doscher said could be the Mavericks best player, also return.

7. Archbishop Stepinac (0-0)
It seems every year the Crusaders are overlooked and every year they win the Bronx/Westchester division title. That’s the case again this season for a veteran team deep on pitching. Christian Huertas, Danny DeFilippo, John Galgano and Julian Ponce are all part of a strong rotation, while starting third baseman Donato Signore could once again be the closer.

8. Regis (0-0)
Lanky lefty Chris Bates, who was one of the top pitchers in the city last year is at Richmond and Kevin Ames, who has two years of varsity experience, will move atop the rotation. Furman-bound Jake Kinsley is a three-year starter and one of the top catchers in the CHSAA and he’s joined by Dan Morris, a three-year varsity player at short and second baseman Julien Machuca, who has already drawn interest from Boston College.

9. Iona Prep (0-0)
Colin Moran has taken his game to the ACC as a freshman at North Carolina, but there are some live arms in New Rochelle this year led by Rob Ambrosino, who tossed a two-hit gem against St. Francis Prep in last year’s playoffs. Also back on a deep Iona Prep team are Vinny DeMaria, Christian Fiorito and Justin Palladino and the entire outfield.

10. All Hallows (0-0)
Few teams have the luxury All Hallows coach Ed Gonzalez has – an established, polished ace. St. Louis-bound James Norwood could be the most dominant pitcher in the city this spring. The Gaels are hurt by the loss of Alexis Torres to PSAL perennial powerhouse George Washington, but sophomore shortstop Stephen Alemas could be a rising star.
