WILIAMSPORT – The Cyclones blew the opener of the best-of-three New York-Penn League championship series, losing 7-2 to Williamsport.

Each team had 12 hits, but the Crosscutters’ barrage yielded more runs.

Williamsport took the lead with a five-run second inning. Consecutive singles were followed by an error by Cyclones third baseman Aaron Baldiris that loaded the bases. Two infield hits gave the Cutters their first two runs, and the bases eventually were cleared on a Nyjer Morgan triple.

“That was the surprise of the night for us,” Cyclones manager Tim Teufel said of Morgan. “All year, he’s been a slap hitter, so we didn’t expect that kind of power.”

The series resumes tonight at Coney Island, with game three there on Thursday, if necessary.
