CYCLONES WIN OPENER
NY/PENN LEAGUE: Cyclones 2 – Jammers 1
JAMESTOWN – With Dodger great Carl Erskine looking on last night, the Brooklyn Cyclones triumphed in their debut – the first pro baseball game played by a squad from the Borough of Kings in 44 years.
The Cyclones, a Met Class-A farm team in the New York/Penn League that will open at home next week, beat the Jamestown Jammers 2-1.
Having a team from Brooklyn opened a new chapter in the tragic borough’s baseball history – and every inning wrote a new page.
First hit? A second-inning single by Noel Devare.
First home run? A fifth-inning clout by Edgar Rodriguez.
First game-winning hit? A sixth-inning double by Frank Corr.
“To tell you the truth there were butterflies just going out there,” said Corr, reflecting on the burden of history. “So this feels especially good.”
