The Devils’ promised quest for a top-flight forward has turned to Phoenix’s Jeremy Roenick, sources have told The Post.
New Jersey is said to be putting together a package of players in an attempt to bring the former 50-goal scorer to the Meadowlands. Devils GM Lou Lamoriello is trying to bolster his offense, which has let him down the past three postseasons, and is believed to be seeking a goal-scoring winger, as well as a top center, and the name of Washington sniper Peter Bondra has surfaced.
The Devils are not expected to do much in the unrestricted free agent market, where they will lose Dave Andreychuk and Bobby Carpenter. Instead, they will be trying to deal some of their wealth of talent in straight trades.
The Devils are also believed to be interested in Colorado’s Joe Sakic, but may find Roenick more available from Phoenix, where he has never scored 30 goals in his three seasons with the Coyotes. With Peter Forsberg out 4-6 months with shoulder surgery, Sakic is almost certainly staying put.
Roenick is believed to be on the block because of locker room strife, and the word is that he was nearly dealt back to Chicago recently for a package including Eric Daze, a first-round pick and at least one other player.
The Rangers are said to be interested in obtaining Roenick, but are finding it hard to put together an attractive enough package for the 29-year-old center. The Sharks are also believed to be in the bidding for Roenick, who led the Coyotes with 72 points last season. Phoenix GM Bobby Smith last week shot down rumors of a deal for Detroit’s Brendan Shanahan.
The Devils would likely have to return a top center to Phoenix, such as Bobby Holik or Jason Arnott, in addition to surrendering at least another of their wealth of young talent. Roenick and Lamoriello have ties from the U.S. national program, as well as from Roenick’s New England backround.
The Coyotes have been an underachieving team with Roenick; they fired coach Jim Schoenfeld last month, replacing him with Bobby Francis.
